As Ng sings in Cantonese, they twist up musical traditions and set them ablaze like Bill Orcutt, Henry Flynt, or 75 Dollar Bill. On their debut album, Phantom Rhythm from Wharf Cat Records , the guitar and bass duo draw on the buzzy rock ‘n’ roll bedrock of Bo Diddley and mesmerizing solos of West African desert blues. Ng and Frank first teamed up as the co-founders of Rose Mansion Analog, a DIY label/collective bridging the gaps between international artists, before coming together as Gong Gong Gong. As the child of diplomats from the Canadian foreign service in China, Frank spent his formative years between Beijing and Montreal, previously playing with his brother Simon as the grooving minimal wave two-piece Hot & Cold. Ng grew up in Hong Kong before moving to Beijing with the Offset: Spectacles, the heavily underrated, VU-indebted band he played in until 2011.

In typical Westside Gunn fashion, the drums were kept out until the first verse, and hook were laid so it could build up. “I felt like it needed some drums for the DJ’s to blend into their mixes. “This one was more of me listening to Brady’s direction and vision,” Premier said.
Thanks to fellow producer Brady Watt, Premo and the Griselda hitter join forces for “The Narcissist,” where Gunn continues Griselda’s tradition of rapping without drums (at least for the first verse) to express his wealth and more. Westside Gunn’s penchant for rapping without certain elements caught the attention of one of Hip Hop’s greatest producers in DJ Premier.
